CRIME APPARENTLY PAYS

Once again it must be me but I don't understand why citizens are supposed to be responsible for not being crime victims. Lock your car, put your valuables in the trunk. Check and re-check your accounts, credit card bills, utility bills, phone bills to ensure you aren't being ripped off by identity theft and/or cramming by third parties on your bills. On the local news in Northeast Texas this month there have been news stories about July being the number one month for car theft so be careful!

I had a car stolen once. I made the mistake of parking it, locking it, leaving the windows up and having nothing of value in sight. Unfortunately those windows in those cars break real easy. When I returned to my parking place I found little tiny pieces of tempered glass. Called the husband and police, in that order, and was told to stay where I was, everyone was on there way. Husband got there. Police called back and said they were too busy to come out and take a report but would take one over the phone. The very professional officer advised us he didn't think our car would be recovered. It was probably already parts by now and just not much they could do about it. This was on a New Year's Eve...thieves apparently like a nice ride for this holiday whether or not it has a driver's window. Our car was recovered when it was used as the get away car in the theft of another vehicle. They arrested the guys, impounded our car and returned the second stolen vehicle to it's owner. We got to pay to get our car out of impound and for the damage done during the joy ride. The guys who stole the cars got off. Just too much hassle to prosecute.

I have a plan. Let's develop a court, a 24/365 court, that can handle cases of people caught red handed. Not give them a chance to clean up, clean out, plead not guilty and set free because life has been hard and daddy was mean. Let's catch them, sentence them and incarcerate them immediately. They can be on the crews that clean the highways and public parks.   In August.

People caught shoplifting, breaking and entering, drunk driving, causing criminal mischief, etc. Let's give the perpetrators of these crimes those swift and speedy trials they are promised. Let's not give lawyers the opportunity to file motion after motion and play the waiting game with the system. Hoping victims forget, hoping evidence is lost, hoping the arresting officer can't make it to court. That isn't justice for victims. That is justice for criminals.

The justice system is becoming a joke. Lawyers, once revered, are now thought of as slimy, money grubbing, ego maniacal jerks. They protect the guilty. They milk the victims. Have you needed an attorney? You pay for EVERYTHING down to copies, postage and parking at the courthouse for your attorney's Jag. It is enough to make one ill.

Criminals however get those attorneys for free and walk away with a slap on the wrist. A little theft, a little car jacking, a little assault and battery doesn't sound like much until you are the victim. Put the criminal back out on the street until he/she commits a crime big enough to warrant real justice. In the meantime they can return to their criminal activity and profit quite nicely.

Tired of it. Anyone caught red handed shouldn't even get to plead. You stole my car, you spend six months incarcerated while you work to pay for my car. You earn your money by being a janitor in a prison or cleaning the roadsides or painting public buildings or building housing for the poor. You be productive AND learn a lesson. I get the damage to my car paid for. Seems fair.

Even as I write this I am aware of the many injustices caused by the justice system to those falsely accused. That is a different issue and another blog.

You're Welcome,
Lillybell Blues
